Obyte is a decentralized ledger system that was launched on December 25, 2016. It utilizes a directed acyclic graph (DAG) technology instead of traditional blockchain, enabling true decentralization by eliminating power centers like miners and middlemen. The absence of blocks and miners makes access to the Obyte ledger decentralized, disintermediated, and open. It is also claimed to be the first DAG-based cryptocurrency platform to support decentralized applications (dApps). Unlike blockchain-based dApps, Obyte's dApps are developed using Oscript, a new language that avoids common unsafe programming patterns. Obyte is connected to other networks like Ethereum through a decentralized cross-chain bridge called Counterstake.
The Obyte team believes that their platform is well-suited for DeFi applications. Notable DeFi apps available exclusively on Obyte include bonded stablecoins, Oswap DEX (a decentralized exchange with increased APYs for liquidity providers and leveraged trading without liquidations), and the OSWAP governance token specifically designed for the Oswap DEX. Other features of Obyte include self-sovereign identity, private untraceable currencies, the ability to send crypto using textcoins, and libraries with extremely small footprints that are suitable for small IoT devices.
