Peercoin is a cryptocurrency that was launched in 2012 as an alternative to Bitcoin. It was created by Sunny King and Scott Nadal with the aim of overcoming some of the limitations of Bitcoin, such as its high energy consumption and lack of long-term sustainability.
Peercoin distinguishes itself by implementing a hybrid proof-of-stake (PoS) and proof-of-work (PoW) system. This means that unlike Bitcoin, which solely relies on PoW for transaction validation, Peercoin also incorporates PoS. PoS allows the verification of transactions to be based on the number of coins held by the participants, making the system more energy-efficient and providing an incentive for coin holders to participate in securing the network.
Additionally, Peercoin implements a process called "minting" instead of mining. In the minting process, users who hold Peercoins over a certain period of time are eligible to mint new coins and secure the network.
Peercoin has a maximum coin supply of 2 billion, which is significantly larger than Bitcoin's supply. However, unlike Bitcoin, Peercoin has an annual inflation rate, which rewards participants who secure the network through minting and helps ensure the longevity and sustainability of the cryptocurrency.
